Mayo Navi’s top of their Class in Clare

Ed O’Callaghan and Ger Clancy scored a remarkable victory in their Ford Escort Mk2 on last Sunday’s Oak Wood Arms Hotel Clare Stages Rally.
Despite treacherous conditions and only having 2 wheel drive against 4 wheel drive opposition, O’Callaghan and Clancy blazed a trail through the opening two stages to lead by 8.3 seconds at the first service halt of the day. His nearest pursuer was Monaghan’s Daniel McKenna, who had Mayo club member Kevin Glynn on the notes, the pair were making just their second appearance together in the P1 Rally Rentals Ford Fiesta R5.
A puncture on the Fiesta on stage 4 saw McKenna and Glynn drop down to eight and out of contention although they battled back to fourth overall, posting fastest times on the final two stages of the day and also taking the top honors in Class five.
Tubbercurry’s Aidan Gannon also had a good day in the navigators seat calling the notes for Anthony O’ Brien, the pair brought their Evo 9 home 16th overall and 1st in Class 9.

You can with a Nissan

‘You can with a Nissan’…the tag line from a multinational automobile manufacturer; it shone through on Sunday last at a wet and windy Ballyfeeney, Co. Roscommon; venue for Midland Motorclub’s Autocross event. David Healy in his small budget, self built Class 2 Nissan Primera, proved that its not always about expensive gearboxes and top of the range suspension as his 1996 Primera, not only claimed top spot in Class 2 but also finished the event ahead of 4wd powered Subaru’s and Evo’s. Needless to say there was more than just a ‘Tiny’ smile on Sunday evening.
The day didn’t go aswell for the other Mayo competitor Alan Mcguire, his Peugeot was hampered by electrical gremlins during the day.

Moran moves top of the Championship

Foxford man Alan Moran put in a masterful performance on the Lakeland Forest Rally, round five of the Valvoline Irish Forestry Rally Championship, held in Enniskillen on Saturday last. Moran with navigator John Burke alongside drove his Peugeot 206 without incident through the forests of west Fermanagh, rewarded at the end of the event with third place points in the junior championships. With championship leader Patrick O’ Brien retiring on the last stage, the points haul for the young Mayo driver propels him into first place overall with only two rounds remaining. Wesport man Ed Muldoon was unlucky, after putting in some fine times earlier in the day he retired his DJ Rally-hire Mitsubishi Evo on the penultimate stage. Next round for both Mayo crews is slightly closer to home, Round six of the Valvoline Irish Forestry Rally Championship, the Mayo Stages Forest Rally takes place on October 18th.

Mayo Gears up for Forest Rally

Mayo & District Motorsport Club are proud to announce details of the Mayo Mini-Stages Forest Rally taking place on Sunday 18th October 2015. Based in Ballina, the event will be the sixth round of the Motorsport Ireland Valvoline Irish Forestry Rally Championship.

Clerk of the Course Trevor O’ Connell said “We are delighted to see the return of a Forest Rally to Mayo after an absence of 15 years, I’m very pleased to welcome on board Crockets on the Quay (Ballina) as main sponsor, as without their help and the help of associated sponsors an event of this magnitude would not be able take place. I would also like to thank my team as we have brought together some of the best forest stages anywhere in Ireland. My thanks go to the local community, land owners and to Coillte and the assistance they have given over these past months, as we have worked hard to overcome difficulties thrown up by the terrain and the weather. I hope everyone will find this very worthwhile and a challenging motorsport competition for the competitors. Thanks also to Motorsport Ireland and the Forest Rally Championship Sub Committee for giving us the opportunity of hosting this event, and we hope it will be a strong round of the championship for the 2015 season.”

While you can be guaranteed plenty of rally related family entertainment and action throughout Ballina over the weekend, the real action will take to the loose surface forest tracks on the morning of Sunday 18th with the competing field leaving Parc fermé in Ballina and moving down the road for the main event which consists of two challenging stages run twice in the Ballycastle and Moygownagh area.

This is an important event in the Motorsport Ireland Valvoline Forestry Rally calendar as it is the penultimate round in the 2015 championship and the last of the Southern rounds. After round five which took place in Enniskillen, Mayo will be a deciding event for many competitors and it is sure to attract an exciting list of entries.

“Whether you’re a frequent forest rally competitor or one of our many Mayo Autocross regulars who wants to make the step up, the Mayo Mini-Stages Forest Rally is the event of 2015 that you don’t want to miss, It’s an rally organised by competitors for competitors” Trevor stated, “and this is reflected by us making it a user friendly event; centralised service in Ballycastle on tarmac and scrutiny available Saturday evening or Sunday morning along with Parc fermé at Rally HQ, Crockets on the Quay in Ballina, that coupled with a 40km compact loop of competitive stages, it makes for an exciting event for all types of competitor” says Trevor.

Galway Summer Rally

Former National rally champion Peadar Hurson in a Subaru S10 WRC took a start to finish victory in the 4×4 Exporter Galway Summer Rally, the penultimate round of the Triton Showers National Rally Championship. Hurson took the lead on stage 1 after pre event favourite and number 1 seed, Declan Boyle, slid his Ford Fiesta WRC off the road into the undergrowth on the opening stage forcing him to retire.

Top Mayo & District Club finisher was Kevin Glynn who was navigating for Daniel McKenna in the P1 Rally Rentals Fiesta R5. Speaking afterwards Daniel thanked Kevin for a fine job on the notes. They had a good steady run winning Class 5 and finishing in eighth place overall. Daniel said he took his time to settle into the car and the new pacenotes. “A few small mistakes probably cost us a few places overall” he said, but he was really impressed with the performance of the Fiesta.

Obliterating the competition in Class 1, Crossmolina brothers Brian and Lorcan Moore lead the class from start to finish in their C-sport Honda Civic. Brian who is based in England working with Bentley Racing, flew back specially for the event, taking a gamble as with 24 hours to go they were still on the reserve list! The mechanic come race driver was a happy man on Sunday evening and thanked his younger brother Lorcan for a great job calling pacenotes, although reporting a few moments during the day, he was thrilled with the end result and can’t wait to get back home to compete in more events between  the busy Bentley racing schedule.

Ballisadore’s Darragh Mullen guided Padraic Condon to 8th in class 10 in a Peugeot 205.

In the junior category, Cormac Phelan earned a hard fought victory in his Citroen C2R2, keeping the Honda Civic of Gary McNamee at bay by just 3.2 seconds. Ballina’s Derek McCarthy navigating for Steven Reynolds finished in 8th place, one ahead of Justin Ryan who suffered alternator problems in his Honda Civic.
